Big Brown: Breeders Cup Classic the target |
|
The Breeders Cup Classic is the target for Big Brown. The race is run at Santa Anita on the 25th of October. Big Brown will have just one run prior to the Breeders Cup, with several options being considered. Big Brown put his dismal Belmont Stakes performance behind him when winning the Haskell International at Monmouth Park last Saturday (August 2, 2008). However he had to work very hard off a slow pace to deny Coal Play in the shadow of the post. Big Brown's odds of 1-5 in the betting looked very skinny at the 200metre pole. It is likely that the Preakness and Kentucky Derby winner would have been more impressive off the fast pace he received in those races. At Monmouth Park he was nearly undone by a sprint finish. Nevertheless his trainer Rick Dutrow was mightily relieved to see his star bounce back from the Belmont. The Haskell was a $1m race, with $600k to the winner, bringing Big Brown's career earnings to $3.3m and counting.
Nick Zito trained the runner-up, a 20/1 shot in
the betting, and also saddled the third placed runner in Cool Coal Man.
