Curlin's conqueror eyes Breeders Cup again |
|
Red Rocks will stay in America after defeating Curlin, who was having his first start on turf, in the Man O'War Stakes. Previously based in England with trainer Brian Meehan, Red Rocks would not be in the first ten middle distance horses in European. Yet he still comprehensively out-pointed Curlin on turf. Connections of the great dirt horse would be insane to pursue a turf career any further. If they were foolish enough to go for the Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp with Curlin they risk humiliating their superstar. Red Rocks is owned by an American, Paul Reddam, and it makes sense for the five-year-old son of Galileo to remain in the USA in preparation for The Breeders Cup Turf under the care of Mark Hennig. Red Rocks won the race two years ago but he is regarded in the UK as a moderate winner of a Breeders Cup, though obviously the air in America certainly suits him. The official UK handicapper rates Curlin's performance when beaten behind Red Rocks 14lb below his best, while Red Rocks, the winner now of $3m, ran up to his best mark. Red Rocks was running in blinkers for the first time in the Man O'War Stakes. Trainer Brian Meehan who has so expertly guided Red Rocks career from Manton in Wiltshire, England, was putting on a brave face. He has lost the horse purely because of the horse's success.
