Breeders Cup Turf for Weld's Winchester |
|
The Breeders Cup Turf beckons for Dermot Weld's Winchester who won the Grade 1 Secretariat Stakes at Arlington yesterday (09/08/08) at betting odds of 7/1. It was Winchester's second victory after his lowly maiden win, but he has been raced in exalted company. There is no doubt a combination of a weak race, for a Grade 1, and the application of first time blinkers and Lasix, contributed to Winchester's seven-length rout. Dermot Weld was talking of an assault on the Breeders Cup Turf after the son of Theatrical had dished out his drubbing to Aidan O'Brien's runner-up Plan, in the $400,000 race. Plan now stays in the USA to join the Kentucky Derby winner Big Brown's stable of controversial trainer Rick Dutrow, after Big Brown's owners bought the horse.
