English Channel poetry as Dylan Thomas fluffs lines Aidan O'Brien's Dylan Thomas flopped badly on the soft ground he is known to hate in the $3m Breeders Cup Turf 2007 at Monmouth Park. Connections had managed to delude themselves that when the officials at Monmouth Park called the ground 'soft' they really meant it was 'good.' If they believed all Americans are liars then two days of rain ought to have given them some clue. Perhaps owners Michael Tabor & John Magnier should re-read the tale of the Emperor's New Clothes. They were not the old ones with their heads firmly buried in the Monmouth Park mud as Dylan Thomas went off 6-5 favorite for his final event, a race no Longchamp Arc de Triomphe winner has ever won. Dylan Thomas was being whipped by Johnny Murtagh before the home turn and finished way back in fifth. Last year's hero Red Rocks ran pretty much to form to be a distant third behind the runaway winner English Channel. The only European thing about the American winner is his name. Fourth place went to Better Talk Now. If some of the Brits had any humility at all they would be feeling a little foolish after this Breeders Cup meeting. As usual, the UK & Irish horses were talked up to the Americans but they drew a blank for the first time since 1998 and covered themselves in ignominy. Unfortunately things went from bad to worse in the Breeders Cup Classic.
