Maryfield wins first running of Filly and Mare Sprint

The devastating weather did nothing to stop Maryfield landing the first running of the Breeders Cup Filly and Mare Sprint at Monmouth Park on Friday (October 26, 2007).

The going was "sloppy" but a better description might have been filthy after torrential downpours. Maryfield relished conditions and came with a powerful run for her jockey Elvis Trujillo to narrowly deny longshot Miraculous Miss by a half length.

Ex-Canadian trained Maryfield was landing the first race of the Breeders Cup meeting. That would have seemed like a pipe-dream on the day her trainer Doug O'Neill claimed her for a mere $50,000 after her USA debut run in January

Miss Macy Sue took third but the 2-1 favorite La Traviata ran disappointingly to come home a poor sixth.
