Top Irish trainer Aidan O'Brien has indicated that his Septimus, Mahler and Yeats all come into consideration for a trip to the 2008 Melbourne Cup. Mahler was a grand third in the Melbourne Cup last year while Yeats was only seventh in 2006. However Yeats has won the last three runnings of the Ascot Gold Cup, including when favourite in the Royal Ascot betting this year. Yeats had been favourite for the Epsom Derby before injury ruled him out as a three-year-old - and that is a measure of his class. O'Brien blamed Yeats' 2006 Melbourne disappointment on a lack of pace and indicated that they may ensure a good pace if Yeats did go to Melbourne again. At this early stage Septimus may be favourite to make the trip to Australia. Septimus is a high-class stayer who could end up better handicapped to win at Melbourne than his better-known stablemates.
