Septimus is almost certain to be Irish trainer Aidan O'Brien's main fancy for The Melbourne Cup this year after easily landing the Irish St Leger today (13 Sept '08). It was a total cakewalk for Septimus, who was giving O'Brien a clean up off all five Irish Classics this term. O'Brien likes the idea of the Arc for Septimus, but with an embarrassment of riches it seems the Melbourne Cup is the main target for the superstar stayer. O'Brien said: "Yes, Septimus will go to Melbourne." The Aussies have never treated the foreign raiders lightly, especially after the victory of Vintage Crop in Australia's number one race, and Septimus is now either favourite or vying for favouritism in most Melbourne Cup betting markets. Purple Moon nearly won last year, only denied by Efficient, and certainly Septimus is streets ahead of that one in terms of ability. As usual O'Brien sets a quandary as he still has Yeats and Alexander of Hales also quoted in the Melbourne Cup betting and options remain open.
